From 7th to 11th November, 1914, the 1st Cornwall Light Infantry battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division were in the front line near Rue du Bacquerot between Neuve Chapelle and Laventie. Too wet to dig trenches they sheltered behind breastworks with the enemy only 45 yards away. To add to their problems there were no communication trenches, only very poor support trenches and all the time snipers and artillery were very much active. Archibald Wheeler was killed here on 8th November.
